When to go to the ER instead

Go to the nearest emergency room or call 911 if you have swelling that is spreading to your eye, neck or throat, trouble breathing or swallowing, a high fever with facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a jaw injury from an accident.

What to do before your visit

Toothache

Rinse with warm salt water, gently floss to remove trapped food, and take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed on the label. Do not place aspirin directly on the gums.

Knocked-out adult tooth

Pick it up by the crown, not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly with milk or water without scrubbing. Try to place it back in the socket and bite gently on gauze. If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk and call us immediately. Teeth have the best chance of being saved when treated within about an hour.

Broken or chipped tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water, save any pieces, and use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling.

Lost crown or filling

Keep the crown if you have it and avoid chewing on that side. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can help until your visit.
