What is a root canal?

Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. When deep decay, a crack or an injury allows bacteria to reach the pulp, it can become inflamed or infected. During a root canal, we remove the damaged pulp, clean and disinfect the inside of the tooth, and seal it to prevent reinfection.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Severe or lingering toothache, especially when chewing

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the trigger is gone

  • Swelling or tenderness in the nearby gums

  • A pimple-like bump on the gum

  • Darkening of the tooth

Some infected teeth cause no symptoms at all, which is one reason regular checkups and X-rays matter.

What to expect during treatment

  • Diagnosis: We examine the tooth and take digital X-rays to confirm what is happening.

  • Numbing: The area is thoroughly numbed so you stay comfortable.

  • Cleaning: We remove the infected pulp and clean and shape the inside of the tooth.

  • Sealing: The canals are filled and sealed, and a temporary or permanent filling is placed.

  • Protection: Most back teeth need a crown afterward to protect them from breaking.

After your root canal

It is normal for the tooth to feel tender for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers usually help. Avoid chewing hard foods on that side until your final restoration is in place, and call us if you have increasing pain or swelling.

Root canal FAQs

Does a root canal hurt?

Most patients say it feels similar to getting a filling. The procedure relieves the pain caused by infection rather than causing it.

How long does a root canal take?

Many root canals are completed in one visit, though some teeth need a second appointment.

Is it better to pull the tooth?

Saving your natural tooth is usually the best option for your bite and jawbone. If a tooth cannot be saved, we also perform extractions and can discuss replacement options.

Will I need a crown?

Back teeth usually need a crown after a root canal. Front teeth sometimes only need a filling.

Can I get a root canal the same day?

If you are in pain, call us. We offer same-day emergency visits whenever possible.
