Reasons a tooth may need to be removed

  • Severe decay or a fracture that cannot be repaired

  • Infection that cannot be treated with a root canal

  • Advanced gum disease that has loosened the tooth

  • Crowding, sometimes as part of orthodontic treatment

  • Problem wisdom teeth

  • Preparing the mouth for dentures

What to expect

  • Evaluation: We examine the tooth, take digital X-rays and review your medical history and medications.

  • Numbing: The area is fully numbed. You will feel pressure, but you should not feel sharp pain.

  • Removal: The tooth is gently loosened and removed. Some teeth require a few stitches.

  • Aftercare: We place gauze, review home-care instructions and make sure you are comfortable before you leave.

Some complex cases, such as deeply impacted wisdom teeth, may be referred to an oral surgeon. We will always explain why and help coordinate your care.

Aftercare tips for a smooth recovery

  • Bite on gauze for the time recommended to control bleeding

  • Avoid using straws, spitting forcefully or smoking for several days to protect the blood clot

  • Eat soft, cool foods at first and chew on the other side

  • Use a cold compress on your cheek to reduce swelling

  • Take pain relievers as directed

  • After the first day, rinse gently with warm salt water

Call us if you have bleeding that will not stop, increasing pain after a few days, fever or swelling that gets worse.

Replacing an extracted tooth

Leaving a gap can allow nearby teeth to shift and may lead to bone loss. Depending on the tooth and your goals, we can discuss a dental implant, a bridge or a partial denture.

Tooth extraction FAQs

Does a tooth extraction hurt?

The area is numbed, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain. Mild soreness for a few days is normal.

How long is recovery?

Most people feel better within a few days. The site continues to heal over the following weeks.

What is dry socket?

Dry socket happens when the blood clot is dislodged, causing increased pain a few days later. Following aftercare instructions lowers the risk. Call us if it happens and we can help.

Can I go back to work the next day?

Many patients return to normal activities the next day, though strenuous exercise should be avoided briefly.

Can you remove a tooth the same day?

For painful emergencies, we offer same-day emergency visits whenever possible.
